How I Think

In today’s modern world a person has to be able to think effectively in an array of different situations. I am a rational, but quite complex thinker when it comes to these scenarios. When compared to the average Joe of philosophical minds, I think I am already one step ahead.

I’m not the very best speaker in terms of speaking fluently, so much of my intelligent thoughts you will never hear. I think this is part of the reason I consider myself, “one step ahead” because I spend so much time evaluating idea’s to the point of where I feel like I’ve written an entire book in my mind on any particular subject.

Dealing with pressures of all kinds has taught me to be patient in my thoughts. When I’m facing pressure to finish an assignment, (often from procrastination) I resist distractions, whether they are uncontrollable thoughts or physical ones, I focus on the task at hand. I only subject myself to this kind of pressure because I know I am able to handle it. In facing pressure to do something because others want me to, I consider the outcomes. I think about whether I will be made to look like a fool or if someone, (including me) might actually benefit. Where a level three thinker might be a little more manipulatable, I am not.

Stress finds its way to me at times and I’ve found that if I think about it, I can usually get rid of it. This may seem odd because most people don’t believe thinking about a problem more helps. I am able to reduce stress by analyzing my reasons for having it. After examination I realize that it’s just a bunch of little issues that when amounted together may seem like a mountain of stress, but alone is only a molehill.

On a more complex note, perhaps the kind of a level one, I am, when listening to other people talk, able to find out what they are about to, “get at” before they even say it. I make every possible connection of outcomes based on their tone of voice, body language, and previously said words. For example, if someone comes up to me and introduces themselves in a very lively, spontaneous manner and continues to tell me something, I might assume its going to be something like recent news or something I can relate to. Often times if he/she uses words associated with certain things I can already narrow the field of outcomes and take the words out of their mouth that is figuratively speaking. I enjoy being able to piece little things like this together, not only is it satisfying, but it can be quite entertaining. The only downfall is when I’m talking to my parents I tend to become impatient because I already, “know” what they are going to say so I let my impatience get in the way of our, “oh-so-peaceful conversations.”

As you already know, how I think when it comes to my goals and desires is very different from how I think about public speaking. I aspire to be a professional musician and I take it very seriously. I know what professional saxophone players sound like, how often they practice, how much they’ve sacrificed and the determination they had to make it in such a small industry. I make it my conscious homework to think in the same manner they did when it comes to approaching music. I already know that it isn’t easy or realistic to become famous, yet alone a professional, but I know what I need to do to get there. Even though it’s virtually impossible, somehow in my mind I know I can.

I don’t always think the same way. Knowing I’m not a level one thinker all the time, I try to find the most effective way of getting to where I want to go in thought by being rational in the process of thinking. Utilizing the simplest concepts and other times much more complex ones in hope that I can someone day become a truly great thinker.
